WHY VOTE YES ON MEASURE J?

WHY VOTE YES ON MEASURE J?

Students need your help. The housing shortage in Davis is now so severe that many students can’t find a place to live – many are forced to commute from other cities, while others crowd into single family homes around town.

yes on measure j

Yes on Measure J means new student housing in the best location for students! Adjacent to both campus and downtown, most residents can walk or bike anywhere they need to go.

Yes on Measure J means affordable housing, environmental sustainability, economic enrichment, less traffic, a host of benefits for everyone. That's why our elected and community leaders, students, environmental activists say Vote Yes on Measure J!

YES ON MEASURE J, BECAUSE...

The vacancy rate in Davis is essentially zero. All renters are affected by the housing shortage, especially students, many who commute from other cities or scramble each year to secure housing for the following fall. Some apartments have so many applicants that they must hold lotteries to choose residents. That’s not right.

This June, voters will have a chance approve Measure J, Student Housing at Nishi. Our City Council and Planning Commission carefully studied this proposal, and both voted unanimously to move it forward. Now it's up to you!

The benefits to our community include:

Affordable Housing

Student Housing at Nishi offers a groundbreaking, privately-funded, affordable housing program. The owners are committed to privately subsidize 330 beds every year for the life of the project (with rents starting just over $400/month) to help financially-challenged UC Davis students.

BEST LOCATION FOR STUDENTS TO LIVE

Students have called for convenient housing close to campus. Residents here can walk or bike to campus and local businesses. Giving students an option to live next to campus will help open some homes in neighborhoods around town that were originally planned for families.

Sustainability

The Nishi property ranked the #1 site for sustainability in California and was chosen over 60 applicants for a grant by the California Strategic Growth Council. It will be a Zero-Net-Energy project. It will provide over 13 acres of designated open space with over 2,000 new trees and shrubs that will reduce the carbon footprint. It will be powered by solar with a goal of Zero Net Energy. It encourages walking and biking as the primary form of transportation through its location, limited car parking spots, and over 2,200 bicycle parking spots.

And much, much more!
